Perchlorate and Agriculture on Mars

چکیده
Perchlorate (ClO4−) is globally enriched in Martian regolith at levels commonly toxic to plants. Consequently, perchlorate presents an obstacle developing agriculture on Mars. Here, we assess the effect of different concentrations plant growth and germination, as well metal release a simulated Gusev Crater generic potting soil. The presence was uniformly detrimental regardless growing medium. Plants soil were able germinate 1 wt.% perchlorate; however, these plants showed restricted decreased leaf area biomass. Some simulant without they reduced growth. In simulant, prevented germination across all treatments. Soil column flow-through experiments perchlorate-containing unable completely remove despite its high solubility. Additionally, present increased metal/phosphorous release, which may also affect biochemistry. Our results support that modify availability such extent that, even with successful removal perchlorate, continue be life. Overall, our study demonstrates provides significant challenge use agricultural substrate further steps, nutrient enrichment, are necessary make it viable substrate.

[1] Isotopic studies indicate that natural perchlorate is produced on Earth in arid environments by the oxidation of chlorine species through pathways involving ozone or its photochemical products. With this analogy, we propose that the arid environment on Mars may have given rise to perchlorate through the action of atmospheric oxidants. A variety of hypothetical pathways can be proposed inclu...
متن کاملA Perchlorate Strategy for Extreme Xerophilic Life on Mars?
The near-surface environment of Mars is a challenging environment for microorganisms to survive. Yet, resources such as perchlorates and hydrogen peroxide-water mixtures are available that could provide supportive tools for putative Martian life. Here, we focus on the useful properties of perchlorates such as hygroscopicity and the suppression of the freezing point of water, and point to perchl...
متن کاملLow Temperature Aqueous Perchlorate Solutions on the Surface of Mars
Introduction: Although there has been no direct evidence for liquid water on the surface of Mars, indirect evidence comes from recent gully formation, which suggests the presence of liquid water processes near the surface [1, 2]. However, pure water is unstable in its liquid form due to the low pressures and temperatures associated with the Martian surface, so water is likely to be kept frozen ...
متن کاملModeling aqueous perchlorate chemistries with applications to Mars
NASA’s Phoenix lander identified perchlorate and carbonate salts on Mars. Perchlorates are rare on Earth, and carbonates have largely been ignored on Mars following the discovery by NASA’s Mars Exploration Rovers of acidic precipitated minerals such as jarosite. In light of the Phoenix results, we updated the aqueous thermodynamic model FREZCHEM to include perchlorate chemistry. FREZCHEM models...
